The research by Hans Spemann (German embryologist) and his colleague Hilde Mangold did a transplantation experiment in frogs which led to the discovery of organizers. ![]() This experiment attempts to repeat Spemann and Mangold's experiment in Xenopus embryos. In the development of a frog embryo, the dorsal lip of the blastopore would be the spearman’s primary organizer. They used this information to induce the growth of a second neural tube on an already developing embryo. In 1924 Hans Spemann and Hilde Mangold showed that cells transplanted from this "organizer" region of the blastopore lip of one embryo will induce gastrulation in any kind of tissue. Based on grafting experiments, Mangold and Spemann showed the dorsal blastopore lip of an amphibian gastrula to be able to induce a secondary body axis1. This area in the amphibian embryo has since been termed the organizer for its role in cell fate determination. However, previous experiments show that cells in one area of the developing embryo are determined before gastrulation. In early stages of development in amphibian embryos, very few cells' fates are rigidly determined.
